Gallaudet Wins Its Fourth Straight College Bowl

Gallaudet University withstood a challenge by NTID/RIT to win the 12th biennial NAD College Bowl competition, held July 8, 2010 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Gallaudet scored 93 points, NTID/RIT 91, and California State University at Northridge 44.

NAD: Where are you from? What was it like where you grew up?
Rachel Mazique: I am from a suburb of Chicago - Arlington Heights, IL. Growing up in the suburbs provided for a quiet neighborhood life, but I had a great education. My parents specifically chose the area because it is three minutes from John Hersey High School, a high school [which has] a good deaf program (mainstreamed with hearing students). It is also the alma mater of the deaf actress and writer, Marlee Matlin!

NAD Board Issues Call for Committee Volunteers

The Board of Directors of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is pleased to present the opportunity for interested persons to contribute their volunteer time and expertise through its standing and strategic committees.

“By expanding your involvement in the NAD and sharing your knowledge and perspectives, you are afforded a wealth of enriching experiences,” said Bobbie Beth Scoggins, NAD President. “Being an active participant in the NAD can be as simple as becoming part of a committee. We look forward to your support and involvement.”

DOJ Needs Your Comments on Proposed ADA Updates

On July 26, the Department of Justice (DOJ) issued four advanced notice of proposed rulemaking (ANPRMs) calling for public comments about proposed updates to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) which would affect the rules for websites, movie theatres, 9-1-1 services, and equipment/furniture manufacturers. The DOJ uses ANPRMs to announce rules that it plans to change and seek input from the public to help shape the new regulations.

The 21st International Congress on the Education of the Deaf (ICED) held in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 18-22, 2010 drew over 800 participants from 62 countries. MSD Board members Barbara Raimondo, Esquire, Dr. Cynthia Neese-Bailes, Dr. Angela McCaskill and I along with 84 other Americans attended the Congress. The first ICED was held in 1878 in Paris, France and is now held every five years. Today, ICED is perhaps the most recognized international conference for educators and researchers working with deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

The 2010 NAD Youth Leadership Camp (YLC) has begun. The camp session runs from July 23rd until August 19th in Stayton, Oregon. Campers embark on a month-long journey - a journey of learning, personal growth, and empowerment. In addition, campers experience self-discovery, learn about self-identity, and understand various aspects about themselves.

New Board members elected: Margie English (Region 1), Richard McCowin (Region 2), Chris Patterson (Region 3) and Julie Rems Smario (Region 4)

The 2010-2012 Executive Board is as follows: Sheri Farinha (Secretary) and Michael Michner (Treasurer). Bobbie Beth Scoggins and Christopher Wagner were re-elected as President and Vice President.
